How to read a BaZi chart step by step

Before interpretation, confirm the calendar, timezone, solar-term boundaries, day-boundary rule, and birth-time precision.

Two calculators can differ because they use Lunar New Year instead of Li Chun for the year pillar, calendar months instead of solar terms for the month pillar, different Zi-hour day boundaries, or different true-solar-time policies. Record the convention instead of hiding the disagreement.

2. What does the Day Master meet in its birth season?

The Day Master is the day stem, but it cannot be read without the month branch and the rest of the chart.

Start with the season, visible stems, roots, and hidden stems. Count is not enough: an element's position, seasonal condition, and relationships affect how strongly it participates. Strong and weak are technical judgments within a school, not praise or criticism of a person.

3. How do the Ten Gods organize relationships?

Ten Gods describe how each stem relates to the Day Master through element and polarity.

They provide a vocabulary for support, expression, resources, pressure, peers, and output. Read where a relationship appears, whether it is rooted or repeated, and what modifies it. A single Wealth, Officer, or Resource label does not prove a concrete life event.

4. Which combinations, clashes, and penalties actually activate?

List relationships first, then check whether their formation conditions are met.

Do not turn every pair of branches into an event prediction. Consider season, transformation conditions, competing relationships, and whether timing introduces or removes a required component. Explain the adopted school's rule when interpretations differ.

5. What changes when timing is added?

Overlay Da Yun, year, month, and day in layers rather than blending them into one claim.

The natal chart is the reference structure. Da Yun supplies a ten-year context. Annual and monthly pillars can make parts of that context more visible. Daily timing is narrower and should not be used to manufacture certainty. Keep computed pillars separate from interpretive probability.

Two audited examples: why the order changes the reading

Illustrative examples only. They are not personal readings or predictions. They use a provisional strength model, and another documented BaZi school may interpret the same structure differently.

Both examples show why Day Master labels alone are inadequate. Their chart data, strength classification, and rule version are reproducible in the calculator. The strength model is explicitly provisional: it records seasonal command, roots, visible support, drain, control, disputed factors, and a confidence score, but it does not claim to settle differences between classical schools. Interpretive claims remain confidence-labelled and should not be treated as personal forecasts or universal fact.

1. Wuhan, 11 Nov 1994 at 12:00, female: 甲戌 / 乙亥 / 辛丑 / 甲午. The 辛 Metal Day Master meets 亥 Water month command, classified weak by the provisional strength model. Interpretation must account for output drain, roots in 丑 and 戌, visible Wood wealth relationships, and the model's stated uncertainty.
2. Tokyo, 20 Mar 1988 at 18:15, male: 戊辰 / 乙卯 / 甲戌 / 癸酉. The 甲 Wood Day Master meets 卯 Wood month command, but the engine marks overall strength uncertain because support, drain, control, roots, and relationship conditions do not justify a simple count-based verdict.
